Dolphins 16, Patriots 13
It’s Monday, December 8, 1980. The Miami Dolphins defeat the New England Patriots 16-13 on Monday Night Football.
In the final moments of the contest ABC’s Howard Cosell, who is calling the game, says that former Beatle John Lennon has been shot near his apartment in New York City…but is expected to survive.
Lennon spends several weeks in the hospital recovering but is released on Christmas Day.
On January 25, 1981 he makes an appearance at halftime of Super Bowl XV in New Orleans. The Oakland Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10.
On Valentine’s Day Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney reunite to give a concert in Chicago for the American hostages who are just back from Iran.
Lennon takes up painting and travels the world teaching music. He has grandkids and, starting in 1990 when he’s 50 years old, he plays Santa Claus every Christmas for special concerts for veterans and ill children in England, the U.S., the U.S.S.R. and other countries.
His favorite book is The Catcher in the Rye. His favorite movie is Black Christmas. He grows a beard.
He’s John Lennon. He’s 78. And still singing. --TK
